We just got the results of this year’s early applications for college and I can’ resist writing another letter. Gaffney kids have been accepted to: Bowdoin, Bucknell, Connecticut College, Franklin & Marshal, Lafayette, Princeton, and University of Pennsylvania (2). Each of these students received a minimum of $70,000 per year which is $280,000 for 4 years.
All of our students have extraordinary stories and the chance to go to college and graduate without debt will change their lives. Linda was awarded $74,000 in financial aid from Lafayette. Her grandfather, on her mother’s side, owns a jewelry store in Bridgeport. The family’s plan was to let Linda work at the jewelry store instead of going to college.
Linda’s father was just released from prison where he was sent after trying to rob a bank with a revolver. He needed the money to support his drug habit. Linda has decided to become a public defender because she believes that her father’s sentence of 5 years in jail was too long, and if he had a better lawyer, he might have been released earlier. With this financial support from Lafayette, Linda will be able to go to law school.
This year we have fifteen Gaffney students and those who did not apply for early admission will hear in April. These students have applied to: Amherst, Carnegie Mellon, Colgate, Bowdoin, Dartmouth, Tufts University, University of Chicago, and Williams.
We are beginning the interview process for next year and look forward to your support so that we can sustain our tradition of placing these extraordinary students into the best colleges in the United States.
